The Galaxy name had begun to appear across the Android spectrum, not just in phones but in tablets, and there was a really exciting new version of Android too. Samsung had the keys again, and it was in a really strong position: its Galaxy S II had been an enormous hit and even outsold Apple's iPhone. The 2011 Galaxy Nexus was an important phone for several reasons. The Nexus One's specs may look primitive now, but at the time a 3.7-inch screen was considered pretty impressive for a phone, as were the 5 MP camera and 1,400 mAh battery. These days we criticize firms when they put their own apps on top of stock Android. It set out the stall for Android, showing the OS in its purest form, although fans of irony will enjoy the fact that it was criticised for not offering lots of extra goodies on top of the OS. It would be the first time – and to date, the last time – the Taiwanese manufacturer would make a Nexus smartphone. It had made the very first commercial Android phone, the HTC Dream, and Google commissioned it to create the very first Nexus. Apple clearly took the Nexus One seriously, as it should have: it was the beginning of something big.īack in 2010, HTC was the big Kahuna of Android phones. The Nexus One, Apple said, violated 20 of its patents. While the Nexus 6 was and is a perfectly decent device, it didn't lead the pack like other Nexus phones had.Įverybody knows that Apple sued Samsung for being a little bit copycat-y, but the battle against Android actually began with HTC. Stereo speakers, improved battery and a better camera were all welcome, of course, but the improved specs weren't dramatically better than the previous model. That big screen has a great resolution, but the brightness and whites aren't as good as rival phablets – especially not Samsung's. As a result, the mainstream appeal that LG had brought to the range was lost. It was too big, and while the price was justified by the specifications, it wasn't right for consumers in a crowded and competitive market. From the beginning it was clear that this Nexus wasn't designed for the general public. In many ways, the Nexus 6 was a back-to-basics Nexus: despite the considerable achievements of the phone's predecessors, Google decided that it was time to forget about the consumer market and go back to focusing on developers. It'd take another Nexus for the series to find wider fame. It sold okay, however: Google hadn't really spotted the commercial potential of the Nexus brand, so the S was still aimed largely at developers. At the time, selling a phone for around the cost of a current Moto G meant that it was towards the more expensive end of the market. One, Samsung effectively did the electronic version of scribbling "Google" over the Samsung logo on the Galaxy S: the phone was really a minor update of Samsung's own device. It introduced the front camera and NFC, and had a 4-inch, 480 x 800 SuperAMOLED screen, a 1,500 mAh battery and a 5 MP main camera. It wasn't a bad phone for its time and in many respects it offered some of the best specs around. The Nexus S was the second Nexus phone, and Google's first partnership with Samsung. A history of the Google Nexus phone series. There are no losers here – we've loved every Nexus to date – but which was the most impressive Nexus of all? Let's find out. To decide on our list we've analyzed each phone on the basis of the competition at the time, its value for money and how much of a wow factor it had. Surely the best Nexus is the newest one? That's true to a point, but some Nexuses have been more important than others. You can print the cards by selecting print from your browser window. Amir Schiby, another Israeli artist showed a painfully poignant upside-down image of four young boys playing on a Gaza beach. Palestinian artist Sami Musa has sent two pieces from his recent “Chic-art resistance” show, where instruments and detritus of war is repurposed in unexpected – even charming – ways. Bansky allowed his sheet-covered art to stay – generating an artistic dialogue between his invited artists from the Middle East.Īlongside Alzaqzouq, there was work by Israeli Neta Harari Navon – paintings based on press photographs of the evacuation of an Israeli settlement in the West Bank. He then lay down for a “die-in” in front of it. Speaking of which… Banksy invited three artists from Israel and three from Palestine, but one Palestinian artist, Shadi Alzaqzouq, took offence to the presence of his Israeli contemporaries and staged a protest, covering his work with a sheet on which he had written “RIP Gaza: Boycott Israel” in charcoal. The piece chimed exactly with Banky’s sentiments about state controls and personal freedoms. The work has been shown already in London and abroad, but Cauty had updated it for Dismaland. Tiny emergency lights flashed on and off, police appeared like ants in tight formations hunting for wrongdoers. A huge dystopian model village – entitled the Aftermath Dislocation Principle Part I – it contained some 3000 miniature riot police attending the aftermath of some terrible urban revolt. Jimmy Cauty – no one could miss the power of this extraordinary installation by Jimmy Cauty – formerly one half of the acid house duo The KLF. Severija Incirauskaite – Kriauneviciene – a Lithuanian artist who embroidered folk art daisies onto car doors – a weird melding of the old and new worlds. Shown in the dark first gallery, it was uncanny and fascinating in turn. We wonder where these works are now and what will become of them? Would they have any meaning in an art gallery?Īlongside Bansky, here’s a pick of some of the artists we most remember from our trip:ĭietrich Wegner – this Australian produced the unsettling ‘baby in a vending machine’ – a hyperrealistic model of a baby hanging in a real vending machine as if you could drop in a few coins and it buy it. They ‘all toil under the darkening clouds’ and shared a common concern for the fragility of the environment, fleeting between ominous foreboding and a sense of joy in the moment.īansky himself – as well as acting as producer and curator – made a huge amount of new work for the show – mostly large pop-art style installations, including the central apocalyptic fountain, the distorted Little Mermaid sculpture, the Fairy Castle with paparazzi, the woman attacked by seagulls (pictured), killer whale jumping out of the toilet, and the grim reaper who performed a disco/waltz in a dodgem car. Work by more than 50 artists from 17 countries was on show. This would’ve been a lot easier if Indy hadn’t failed Basil by initially writing him off so many years before. Erratic, and paranoid, Basil’s obsession was offputting but Indy and Helena trusted him enough to know they need to find the Antikytherma before the Nazis do. Unfortunately, Helena’s obsession is with monetary gains leading her to enlist the help of a reluctant Indy. The obsession is inadvertently passed on to her after his death. Basil spends half of his life devoted to finding the missing piece, ignoring his daughter Helena in the process. The entire crux of Dial of Destiny revolves around Basil’s obsession with what the Antikythera was used for or capable of. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band the year before. Fans of The Beatles often say the same thing about Magical Mystery Tour as a direct follow-up to the wildly popular and culturally significant Sgt. Merely existing makes Dial of Destiny feel just as tacked on. For all its misgivings, Crystal Skull ends on a satisfying note for the franchise. Something Dial of Destiny relates to being an installment no one was really asking for. Looking back, it might even feel a little tacked on. In the context of history, 1969 didn’t have as much cultural significance as the previous year. While used as a sight gag, “Magical Mystery Tour” feels strangely meta to both the film and the adventure Indiana Jones finds himself in. Shaken awake by the neighbors blasting “Magical Mystery Tour”, Indy (and the audience) is thrust into a brand new unpredictable, nostalgia-fueled adventure. The man who witnessed the Arc of the Covenant melt Nazis is now falling asleep watching a 13-inch TV in his boxers. Socks hanging out to dry, photos of his late father and his estranged wife, as well as unsigned divorce papers. The relics adorning his walls are of the mundane variety. Instead of an elaborate office with awards, plaques, and historical artifacts, 80-year-old Indiana Jones lives in a tiny NYC apartment. To fill the empty space, Capital added on the non-album singles The Beatles released surrounding the EP and television film. The expansion was due to Capital Records’ lack of confidence in the EP format. When the record was released here in the States, it was expanded to an LP against the band’s wishes. But would Indy himself turn away from thinking outside of the box using a historical artifact?Īlso for some ground rules, I’m talking about the original UK Magical Mystery Tour soundtrack EP. The correlation between Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour is most likely coincidental. Keep in mind, director James Mangold hasn’t spoken of why he chose that particular song for the film. I’ve come to believe it’s not so much what you believe. I don’t believe in magic, but a few times in my life, I’ve seen things. Like an audio archeologist, as soon as my screening was over, I had to listen to the album again. Needless to say, I thought of some interesting parallels between the film and The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour EP. Maybe it’s the prestigious exclusivity of the Lennon/McCartney catalog but the needle drop made the scene feel more important. While it’s rare to hear a Beatles song used in a movie, it never fails to elevate a scene. The same tactic is used in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny with the use of The Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour” signifying it was the late 1960s. Even then, it was coyly used to let the audience know the film takes place in 1958. In fact, the only secular song in the franchise was “Hound Dog” in 2008’s Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Arguably just as important as Harrison Ford himself! With each film set so long ago, there’s a timelessness void of any modern needle drops. Sound design has always been the most important element of the franchise. Not to mention the indescribable scores of the legendary John Williams. No matter which film the Indiana Jones franchise is your favorite or least favorite, there remains one constant: sound design.īe it the sound of punching a Nazi, the crack of a whip, or the hilarious Wilhelm Scream, the Indiana Jones series has a distinctive sound. Geekbench doesn’t measure 3D graphics rendering performance like the Cinebench test above. How to use Geekbench to benchmark your Mac’s GPU It’ll take you through the test, and your final result will be displayed next to the Run button. To perform the test, simply open Cinebench and click Run next to the OpenGL test in the top-lefthand corner of the app. You’ll see some of the best results following the test, but Maxon doesn’t have an easy to search database for different models like Geekbench does. In those tests you’ll see 3D cars zooming around dimly-lit city streets, which will test your graphics card’s ability to handle nearly 1 million polygons at once.Īfter the tests have run you’ll see the frames per second (fps) result and a score, with the higher the result the better. There are also tests for OpenGL and Metal (Apple’s hardware-accelerated 3D graphic programming interface). One renders a 3D scene containing 2,000 objects with lights, reflections, shadows, and shaders. There are a number of tests you can run to test your graphics card performance. How to use Cinebench to benchmark your Mac’s GPUĬinebench R23, which you can download here, is another free piece of software that, in addition to testing your Mac’s CPU (much like Geekbench without the ability to compare with other results online), will use an OpenGL and Metal test to benchmark your graphics card. We stopped using this because it wasn’t running natively on M1 and M2 Macs though. We use the “Extreme HD” preset for a quick and easy test. We also use Unigene Valley, download it here. It should give you an idea of how well your computer is performing at the moment, and whether the upgrade you’re considering is worth it in terms of raw processing power. You can take these results and compare them to other benchmark tests on the Geekbench Browser, allowing you to see how your Mac compares to the latest generation of Macs, and even its competitors from other manufacturers. Think of it as your Mac’s top-end performance. The multi-core results show you how well your Mac can perform when pushed to its absolute limits, as it’ll use multiple processing cores at once to handle the strain. Other applications are designed to be multi-threaded, so that lots of processes can run at the same time. Many applications have their performance limited by a single main thread, so single-core CPU performance will determine how fast they run. The single-core score helps give a sense of how fast the Mac performs under certain situations when only a single processing core is handling everything. The reader ’ s transceiver demodulates and decodes the tag ’ s response, extracting the transmitted data. They emit continuous or pulsed radio waves to energize nearby tags and receive their responses. Data communication: RFID readers communicate with tags through electromagnetic coupling.Antennas can be designed as dipoles, loops, patches, or customized shapes depending on the application requirements. Higher-frequency RFID systems usually have smaller antenna sizes compared to lower-frequency systems. The size and shape of the antenna depend on the frequency band used and the desired read range. Antenna design: RFID antennas can be classified into linear polarized, circular polarized, and near-field antennas. The emitted waves serve as energy sources and communication carriers. Radio wave emission: RFID readers emit radio waves in a specific frequency band.Semi-passive tags use the reader ’ s energy for powering the IC but have a battery for signal transmission. Passive tags rely on the reader ’ s energy for power, while active tags have their own power source (battery) to actively transmit signals. Types of tags: RFID tags can be categorized as passive, active, or semi-passive (battery-assisted passive). The IC then modulates the radio waves and backscatters them to the reader, transmitting the stored data (UID and additional information). Data transfer: When energized by an RFID reader ’ s radio waves, the tag ’ s antenna receives power and activates the IC.Each frequency band has its advantages in terms of read range, data transfer speed, and resistance to interference. Frequency bands: RFID tags operate in different frequency bands, such as low frequency (LF: 125 kHz and 134 kHz), high frequency (HF: 13.56 MHz), and ultra-high frequency (UHF: 860-960 MHz).The IC contains non-volatile memory, which stores data and a unique identification number.
